    Our Junior Cruisers are all about having a blast on two wheels. Through engaging activities and games, your child will discover the joy of cycling in a safe, car-free environment.

    Embark on an exciting  6 session cycling journey with our Junior Cruisers at the San Diego Velodrome! Tailored for budding sriders aged 8 to 18, this program is the perfect introduction to the exhilarating world of track cycling. Inspired by a holistic approach to early childhood development, our objective is to create a foundation for your child's growth by introducing them to the world of cycling in a fun and engaging manner.

    What to Expect:
    1. Safety:  We work together to make sure your child is able to safely ride on a track and create life long lessons around group riding.  Every class starts with basic riding safety and strategies to ride safely.

    2. Skill Building: From basic handling of a fixed gear track bike to mastering the art of entering and exiting the track safely, our introductory sessions focus on developing fundamental cycling skills. Velodrome etiquette, riding pace lines, and structured workouts are all part of the exciting curriculum.

    3. Making Connections: Beyond the bike, our classes encourage kids to make new friends who share a passion for cycling. Building camaraderie and a growth mindset is an essential element of the San Diego Velodrome program experience.

    Rider Requirements:
    A parent must be present in person to meet the coach, see the velodrome, and sign two releases before any child can ride the SD velodrome.
    Children under 12 must have a parent present during the entire class.
    Riders must be able to receive and respond appropriately to instructions.

    What to Bring:
    Bicycle helmet
    Tennis or running shoes
    Cycling-appropriate clothing
    Gloves
    Riding glasses(optional)
    Water bottle
    Light snack or energy bar

    Do not worry if you do not own a track bike, through the SDV Bike Rental program one will be provided at no cost during class sessions.

    This clinic is open to anyone safety certified at the velodrome who is interested in learning Team Sprint and/or Team Pursuit.  Focus will be on start gates, team order, proper exchanges for each event, gearing, and team order.  Maximum number of participants is 30.  

    This clinic is led by Elise Traylor, a track cyclist/coach for CFC.  Elise Traylor has won multiple World Championships, National Championships, and State Championships in various track disciplines and triathlons.  She has taught health for over 18 years, and specializes in nutrition, weight training, and recovery for athletes of all ages.

      Have you wondered what riding the Velodrome is like, but haven’t been able to commit to the six-week course? Come ride the San Diego Velodrome with us!

      In this two hour class you will learn the basics you need to ride a bike safely on the velodrome. We provide the track bike, water, snacks, and two hours of velodrome basics. All you need is a pair of closed toe shoes, a bike helmet, and a good attitude! At the end of this class, you will be Safety Certified, and will be able to join the SDVA and ride the track during open track times.

      Your instructors are Whitney DeSpain and Matt HoffmannTogether, Whitney and Matt have the skills, knowledge and passion help you learn to love the velodrome the way they do.

      Accelerate your cycling journey to the next level with our Spin Club at the San Diego Velodrome! Tailored for experienced young riders aged 8 to 16, this program is designed to hone their skills, foster friendly competition, introduction to structure training and prepare them for exciting racing opportunities. Sessions also include “homework” i.e. strength and mobility training to be done at home or on track to supplement work done on track.


      What to expect

       

      • Structured Training: Introduction to training cycles, Sprints and VO2 max workouts.  Will also focus on pedal mechanics and bike fit to produce the maximum power, speed and endurance.

      • Race Strategies: Participants will delve into the intricacies of race strategies, learning how to tactically navigate the track and outsmart their competitors. This class is ideal for riders aiming to refine their racing approach and strategy.

      • Race Participation: Take your cycling achievements beyond the class! Advanced riders will have the opportunity to participate in races at FNR(Race fee included in Spin Club), TNR, or other prestigious events like Junior Nationals, experiencing the thrill of competitive track cycling.

      • A parent or guardian must be a member of the San Diego Velodrome.

      • A parent must have current year signed releases before any child can ride the San Diego Velodrome.

      • Parent must be present during the entire class.

      • Riders must complete a Junior Cruises session.

      • Riders must be able to receive and respond appropriately to instructions.

      Wednesday night periodized, structured training from 7p-8:30pm with coaches Jeff and Bojac. Members only, must have your own track bike. Minimum age 16.

      This will be a five-night series. Each session will focus on a different element of cycling: endurance, tempo, threshold, VO2. Workouts will also include basic track skills and race simulations.

      Did you just complete a SDVA certification class? You want to learn more about members only workouts that are offered all year?  Please attend these two Monday Night workouts that fall between the 6-week certification sessions.

      May 20th and May 27th  (May 27th is Memorial Day)  Yes, loaner bikes are available, however you must have completed Level 1 class within the last 6 weeks and/or be a SDVA member.

      The workout sessions are Level 2 'class previews'.  The objective for each night will be to improve your fitness and ability to pace, sprint, and increase your racing positioning awareness and ability.  The Hour of Power model will be introduced, but will be 'Leveled up' based on attendance.

      The San Diego Velodrome Association (SDVA) is a public benefit, membership-based 501(C)3 nonprofit corporation incorporated under the laws of the State of California for the purposes of engaging in, promoting, encouraging, and otherwise supporting bicycle track racing, both as an athletic sport as well as a recreational activity, including such related activities as, but not limited to, bicycle safety programs, bicycle swap meets, and youth bicycling programs. The SDVA is granted a use permit by the City of San Diego Park and Recreation Department for the use of the velodrome facility in Balboa Park. The SDVA is responsible for administering, conducting, coordinating, and/or promoting all bicycling recreational and racing activities, including events sanctioned under the provisions of the United Cycling Federation, the United States Olympic Committee, and/or the International Cycling Union (UCI) for the San Diego Velodrome.
